The Oyster Company of Virginia has many programs that benefit the sustainable return of our native ‘Virginia Oyster’ (“Crassostrea virginica”) as the basis for the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its ecosystem by accelerating programs and projects with proven results and enlisting our Virginia Watermen as an important part of the solution.
The Oyster Company of Virginia (“OCVA”) has developed several unique and timely programs for the individual (as well as corporations, organizations, educational institutions and our municipalities) to participate in restoring the life of our Oysters, Watermen & The Bay.
OYSTERS FOR LIFE: Anyone can sponsor an “off bottom” oyster cage package, protecting the oyster seeds while supporting other fish and improving reef habitat. These “aquaculture” oysters are harvested for creating a high value lean protein Eco-food, while providing sustainable Eco-jobs! To say “Thank you” we send you oysters once a year and you have direct access to more oysters at co op prices!
LIVING MEMORIAL OYSTER REEF: The Sentinel ™ : Anyone can donate the OCVA/Reeftek “Sentinel”™ for deployment in one of the 4 major watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay. The “Sentinel” was designed to propagate oysters and protect oyster sanctuaries, while providing three dimensional reefs for supporting other fish and building reef habitat. With today’s climate change and sea level rise, the Sentinel ™ also acts as a buffer for wave attenuation which helps reduce erosion/flooding in sensitive areas around The Bay. These Sentinels ™ can be pre-struck with oyster seeds, GPS located and named for the donor/supporter.
‘BUCK-A-SHUCK’ OYSTER FUNDRAISER: Developed by OCVA as a “win/win” for organizations, fraternities & sororities, and nonprofits wanting to embrace and support the mission of “Oysters For Life” while receiving oysters for their own fundraising projects! Our Marketing Director, Mat Slaughter, whose family has raised oysters in The Bay for six generations, inspired our Buck-A-Shuck program. Named for his grandfather Buck, our Buck-A-Shuck fundraiser is a creative and fun way to engage the many socioeconomic and environmental supporters who want to restore the Bay and support today’s oysters farmers, while raising funds for their favorite charities and organizations.
IN SITU NUTRIENT REMEDIATION PROGRAM (ISNRP): Using modeled and measured science, OCVA has invested significant resources with years of development to provide the nation with the first certified nutrient remediation program using oysters, that is validated, transparent and creates thousands of sustainable jobs and supplies billions of oysters for restoration, renewable and ecological benefits.
